The first objective is to be certain that your spell check and grammar checker are both turned on in the options section of your MS Word program – this will eliminate the most common errors during the editing of your dissertation. The second step is to read the paper after setting it aside for at least a few hours. Many students will skip this step when editing their dissertation because they do not understand how this step will assist in the editing process. This step should not be skipped, the reason is that when you are the author of a paper – particularly long papers such as dissertations, you will most often know what you meant to write and though there may be a missing word – your mind will place that word in the sentence and cause errors.
